Politician, military man and writer of the article under analysis, Alexander R. Boteler was a member of the United States Congress, elected from Virginia, when that state separated from the Union to join the Confederacy in April 1861. He was not, however , priori , a secessionist, and had spoken out in favor of keeping the country united on several occasions, even after the crisis caused by the election of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) as the sixteenth president in November 1860. However, and as many others, he abandoned his position to serve in his native state, Virginia, when it seceded, obtaining a seat in the new Provisional Confederate Congress as a representative of the Shenandoah Valley.
